All of us in public safety are used to responding to emergencies. We do it for a living. That’s why so many of us have taken pay cuts, lowered our benefit packages and taken multiple furlough days. We understand the state is in economic distress. We want to help.
We’ve done our best to discuss a workable set of pension fixes that balance giving taxpayers the relief they need while still keeping first responders and our retirees afloat. Those reasonable fixes were not considered when the legislature enacted SB1609.
The pension changes made by the passage of SB 1609 took effect on July, 20, 2011.
