Deputy Almon W. Dana

ServedWellBigApril 9, 1922

Two motorcycle deputies, Almon Dana and Frank Bell attempted to set a speed trap about 2 a.m. on Tempe Road (Van Buren). When a fast moving car passed Deputy Frank Bell, he pursued it from the East. Deputy Dana heard the engine and started toward it from the West. As customary in those days, motorcycles in pursuit did not use lights and they had no radios. Near the 22nd Street intersection the two deputies collided. Almon Dana, who was pinned under his machine, died the next day from his injuries. Frank Bell though seriously hurt, was thrown clear and survived. The speeder disappeared.
